What to Eat

Good healthy sushi: Goshi Japanese Restaurant ($$$). Part of a larger outdoor food market where you can meander around a bit and try out many of the dessert options near it — there’s a boutique cupcake shop as well as Nite Creamery Slo, which is freshly made ice cream with dry ice that has a bunch of unique flavors (several of them caffeinated).

Healthy breakfast: Seeds. Locally sourced fresh ingredients for toasts, acai bowls, smoothies, and more!

Authentic pizza & pasta: Flour House. Their pizza’s pair perfectly with a nice glass of white wine.

What to Do

Walk through downtown SLO: About 1 mile from the recommended lodging option is the heart of downtown. A pleasant evening stroll to any of the food options listed there!

Walk (or run) through Cal Poly campus: Seeing students on campus is always energizing to me; I did a morning run run using “Cal Poly Architecture and Environmental Design” building as my rough destination.

Hike at Montana de Oro State Park: About 25 minutes drive from downtown SLO, and incredibly gorgeous! Many parking options, and the trails are basically a bunch of coastal loops that go to / from the main road. Dress in layers, and be ready for breathtaking views! Very well-trafficked dirt trails that feel safe and easy.

Horseback trail ride: Book in advance a 1-hour trail ride at Madonna Inn, which was a cheesy-looking inn with a TON of people staying there. The horseback trail ride center is all the way in the back of the property; horses are well-taken care of, and your guide will likely be a student from Cal Poly.
